NATO phonetic alphabet
In setting an treasure hunt / outdoor escape room puzzle, I came across the fact that the NATO phonetic alphabet has two specific spellings that I have been spelling “wrong” all these years.
Apparently the accepted spellings are Alfa
and Juliett
, with the full list being
Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliett, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu
I did get my VHF licence some time ago, and whilst the words are the same I would have mis-spelled them.
There is an excellent PDF which also includes International Morse Code, Flaghoist communication, Semaphore, and Panel signalling.
I knew of the number pronunciations being distinct:
Wun, Too, Tree, Fow-er, Fife, Six, Sev-en, Ait, Nin-er, Zee-ro
